The CASIA hosts China’s National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition (NLPR), which specialises in the fundamental theory of pattern recognition, image processing, computer vision, language and speech processing.  It has world leading expertise in image, video and character recognition.  The NLPR has up-to-date parallel computing cluster, laser surface scanner and wireless motion capture equipment and facilities fostering cutting edge research.

The NLPR has close collaborations with several leading research groups worldwide, such as the Learning and Recognition in Vision group (LEAR) in INRIA at the Grenoble Rhone- Alpes (France), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Concordia University (Canada).

The NLPR has good facilities to host open project researchers to work on machine learning, visual cognition mechanisms, video surveillance and unmanned helper vehicles. Its project researchers are well supported by host supervisors and have resources such as offices, labs, equipment, library access, and other benefits, each as a member of CASIA.
